The Democratic and Republican primaries occurred today in Indiana to select candidates for the November general election. That included the races for all 9 seats in the state’s delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives for regular two-year terms.
For the 118th Congress (which runs from January 2023 to January 2025), Indiana is served by 7 Republicans and 2 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives. 6 incumbents ran for re-nomination today - with 3rd District incumbent Jim Banks leaving to run for the U.S. Senate while Greg Pence of the 6th District and Larry Bucshon of the 8th District retired. It only takes a plurality of the vote for a candidate to receive their party’s nomination.
For the 1st District:
Incumbent Frank Mrvan won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Randy Niemeyer won the Republican primary with 60.8% against Mark Leyva with 24.8% and Ben Ruiz with 14.4%. 30,309 votes counted.
For the 2nd District:
Lori A. Camp won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent Rudy Yakym won the Republican primary unopposed.
For the 3rd District:
Kiley Adolph won the Democratic primary with 62.8% against Phil Goss with 37.2%. 16,365 votes counted.
Marlin Stutzman won the Republican primary with 24.2% against Tim Smith with 22.6%, Wendy Davis with 19.4%, Andy Zay with 16.4%, Grant Bucher with 10.3%, Jon Kenworthy with 3.8%, Mike Felker with 1.8%, and Eric Whalen with 1.5%. 80,324 votes counted.
For the 4th District:
Derrick Holder won the Democratic primary with 63.5% against Rimpi K. Girn with 36.5%. 12,143 votes counted.
Incumbent Jim Baird won the Republican primary with 64.7% against Charles Bookwalter with 27.2% and John P. Piper with 8.0%. 75,254 votes counted.
For the 5th District:
Deborah Pickett won the Democratic primary with 59.5% against Ryan Pfenninger with 40.5%. 19,926 votes counted.
Incumbent Victoria Spartz won the Republican primary with 39.1% against Chuck Goodrich with 33.2%, Max Engling with 9.7%, Raju Chinthala with 7.1%, Mark Hurt with 5.5%, Larry Savage Jr. with 1.9%, Matthew Peiffer with 1.7%, Patrick Malayter with 1.0%, and LD Powell with 0.9%. 80,997 votes counted.
For the 6th District:
Cinde Wirth won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Jefferson Shreve won the Republican primary with 28.4% against Mike Speedy with 22.0%, Jamison Carrier with 20.2%, Bill Frazier with 10.0%, Jeff Raatz with 8.9%, John Jacob with 8.1%, and Darin Childress with 2.4%. 71,415 votes counted.
For the 7th District:
Incumbent André Carson won the Democratic primary with 91.1% against Curtis Godfrey with 5.4% and Pierre Quincy Pullins with 3.5%. 33,850 votes counted.
Jennifer Pace won the Republican primary with 31.2% against Catherine Ping with 29.9%, Philip Davis with 25.7%, and Gabe Whitley with 13.1%. 24,697 votes counted.
For the 8th District:
Erik Hurt won the Democratic primary with 45.1% against Edward Sein with 22.5%, Michael Talarzyk with 20.9%, and Peter Priest with 11.6%. 18,186 votes counted.
Mark Messmer won the Republican primary with 38.5% against John Hostettler with 19.6%, Richard Moss with 14.1%, Dominick Kavanaugh with 11.8%, Kristi Risk with 9.2%, Luke Misner with 2.9%, Jim Case with 2.7%, and Jeremy Heath with 1.2%. 79,657 votes counted.
For the 9th District:
Timothy Peck won the Democratic primary with 66.1% against D. Liam Dorris with 33.9%. 22,080 votes counted.
Incumbent Erin Houchin won the Republican primary with 79.8% against Hugh Doty with 20.2%. 69,227 votes counted.
All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives will be contested in the 2024 general election happening on Tuesday, November 5. The outcome will determine political control of the lower legislative chamber in the U.S. Congress.
