2024 Kentucky State Senate Primary Results
19 of the 38 seats in the state's upper legislative chamber are up this year.
The Democratic and Republican primaries occurred today in Kentucky to select candidates for the November general election. That included the races for half of the State Senate for regular four-year terms - 19 seats overall.
The Kentucky State Senate currently features 31 Republicans and 7 Democrats. 15 incumbents ran for re-nomination today - with open seat contests in Districts 3, 11, 17 and 35. It only takes a plurality of the vote for a candidate to receive their party’s nomination.
For District 1:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Incumbent Jason Howell won the Republican primary with 70.0% against Lynn Bechler with 30.0%. 7,524 votes counted.
For District 3:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Craig Richardson won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 5:
Jamie Skudlarek won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent Stephen Meredith won the Republican primary with 71.7% against Thomas Ballinger with 28.3%. 8,446 votes counted.
For District 7:
Rhonda Davis won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Aaron Reed won the Republican primary with 39.3% against Ed Gallrein with 38.3% and incumbent Adrienne Southworth with 22.4%. 12,281 votes counted. Notably, only 118 votes separate Reed and Gallrein in the unofficial election results.
For District 9:
Karen Pennington won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent David Givens won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 11:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Ed Gallrein won the Republican primary with 77.4% against Duane Froelicher with 22.6%. 9,661 votes counted.
For District 13:
Incumbent Reggie Thomas won the Democratic primary unopposed.
No candidate qualified for the Republican primary.
For District 15:

Incumbent Rick Girdler won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 17:
Kiana Fields won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Matt Nunn won the Republican primary with 67.0% against Julia Jaddock with 33.0%. 9,390 votes counted.

Incumbent Cassie Chambers Armstrong won the Democratic primary unopposed.

Incumbent Brandon Storm won the Republican primary unopposed.

Jennifer Sierra won the Democratic primary unopposed.

Incumbent Johnnie Turner won the Republican primary with 61.7% against Randy Thompson with 31.3% and Shawn Gilley with 7.0%. 6,977 votes counted.
