Shelley Berkley and Victoria Seaman Lead Race to Become Mayor of Las Vegas
Incumbent Mayor Carolyn Goodman (I) was term-limited and couldn't run for a fourth term.
The nonpartisan election occurred today to elect the Mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada. A candidate needed to achieve a 50%+1 majority of the vote to win outright today. Otherwise, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff scheduled for November 5, 2024. Fourteen candidates appeared on the ballot.
Three-term Independent incumbent Mayor Carolyn Goodman was term-limited and couldn’t run for re-election this year. In fact, this will be the first mayoral election in Las Vegas since 1999 without a member of the Goodman family on the ballot. She has held this office since July 2011 and was preceded as Mayor by her husband Oscar Goodman from June 1999 to July 2011.
A runoff has officially been called between Shelley Berkley and Victoria Seaman. The race was called in their favor as they currently lead with 35.7% and 28.9% against Cedric Crear with 18.9%, Tera Anderson with 4.4%, Kara Jenkins with 2.3%, Dan Chapman with 1.9%, Donna Miller with 1.5%, Lynn Baird with 1.3%, Irina Hansen with 1.2%, William Walls III with 0.9%, Michael Pacino with 0.9%, Deb Peck with 0.8%, Kolawole Akingbade with 0.7%, and Eric Medlin with 0.5%. 72,196 votes have been counted.
Berkley previously represented Nevada’s 1st Congressional District from January 1999 to January 2013. In 2012, she was the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Nevada. She ultimately lost the general election 45.9-44.7 against Republican incumbent Dean Heller. From 2014 to 2023, she served as CEO and later Senior Vice President of the Touro College and University System in Nevada and California.
Seaman represented District 34 in the Nevada State Assembly from November 2014 to November 2016. In 2016, she was the Republican nominee for District 6 in the Nevada State Senate. However, she lost the general election 50.9-49.1 against Democrat Nicole Cannizzaro. Since 2019, she has served the 2nd Ward on the Las Vegas City Council - first being elected in a special election.
The Mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada serves for a four-year term with a limit of three terms they may serve. The Mayor also presides over a 6-member City Council.
According to 2023 estimates, Las Vegas is the 24th most populous city in the United States and the most populous city in Nevada.
