2024 Utah State Senate Primary Results
15 of the 29 seats in the state's upper legislative chamber are up this year.
The Democratic and Republican primaries occurred today in Utah to select candidates for the November general election. That included the races for half of the seats in the State Senate for regular four-year terms - 14 seats overall.
The Utah State Senate currently features 23 Republicans and 6 Democrats. 12 incumbents ran for re-nomination today - with open seat contests in Districts 4 and 24. The state also has a primary today for the special election in District 12. It only takes a plurality of the vote for a candidate to receive their party’s nomination.
For District 2:
Nancy Huntly won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent Chris Wilson won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 3:
Stacy Bernal won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent John Johnson won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 4:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Calvin Musselman won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 8:
Aaron Wiley won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent Todd Weiler won the Republican primary with 68.5% against Ronald Mortensen with 31.5%. 15,663 votes counted.
For District 10:
Incumbent Luz Escamilla won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Kyle Erb won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 12 (Special Election):
Appointed incumbent Karen Kwan won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Judy Weeks-Rohner won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 15:
Incumbent Kathleen Riebe won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Scott Cuthbertson currently leads the Republican primary with 39.8% against Amber Shill with 37.3% and Steve Aste with 23.0%. 9,503 votes counted.
For District 16:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Incumbent Wayne Harper won the Republican primary with 58.5% against Christina Boggess with 41.5%. 10,836 votes counted.
For District 17:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Incumbent Lincoln Fillmore won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 22:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Incumbent Heidi Balderree won the Republican primary with 47.8% against Emily Lockhart with 34.7% and Garrett Cammans with 17.6%. 10,192 votes counted.
For District 24:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Keven Stratton won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 25:
Alan Hansen won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent Mike McKell won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 26:
Corbin Frost won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent David Hinkins won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 27:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Incumbent Derrin Owens won the Republican primary unopposed.
For District 29:
Deidra Ritchhart won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent Don Ipson won the Republican primary with 51.1% against Chad Bennion with 48.9%. 21,490 votes counted.
The general election for these 15 seats in the Utah State Senate will occur on Tuesday, November 5.
