Incumbent Virginia Senator Tim Kaine to Face Republican Hung Cao This Fall
The incumbent Democratic Senator was unopposed during the primary.
The Democratic and Republican primaries occurred today in Virginia to select candidates for the U.S. Senate seat up in the November general election. A candidate only needs to secure a plurality of the vote to receive their party’s nomination.
Two-term incumbent Senator Tim Kaine has been declared the winner in the Democratic primary after running unopposed.
Kaine has represented Virginia in the U.S. Senate since January 2013. He currently serves on the Senate Committees on Armed Services; Foreign Relations; Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; and the Budget. Moreover, he chairs the Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Translational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
Meanwhile, Hung Cao has been declared the winner in the Republican primary. The race was called in his favor as he’s currently leading with 61.8% against Scott Parkinson with 11.0%, Eddie Garcia with 9.8%, Chuck Smith with 8.9%, and Jonathan Emord with 8.7%. 270,114 votes have been counted.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Cao was previously the Republican nominee for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District in 2022. He lost the general election 53.2-46.6 against Democratic incumbent Jennifer Wexton.
34 seats in the U.S. Senate will be contested in the 2024 general election happening on Tuesday, November 5. Control of the 100-member upper legislative chamber in the U.S. Congress will be decided by the outcome.
