Jim Justice Dominates Republican Primary for U.S. Senate in West Virginia
Primaries occurred today in West Virginia for seven statewide races.
The Democratic and Republican primaries occurred today in West Virginia to select candidates for the November general election. That included seven races for statewide office - six executive positions and one federal seat in the U.S. Congress.
In West Virginia, it only takes a plurality of the vote in the primary for a candidate to receive their party’s nomination. Notably, Agriculture Commissioner Kent Leonhardt was the only incumbent to seek re-nomination today. That resulted in several competitive primaries today.
For U.S. Senate:
Glenn Elliott won the Democratic primary with 45.4% against Zachary Shrewsbury with 36.1% and Don Blankenship with 18.4%. 101,118 votes counted.
Jim Justice won the Republican primary with 61.8% against Alex Mooney with 26.5%, Bryan Bird with 3.1%, Bryan McKinney with 2.9%, Janet McNulty with 2.1%, Zane Lawhorn with 2.0%, and Don Lindsay with 1.6%. 222,750 votes counted.
For Governor:
Steve Williams won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Patrick Morrisey won the Republican primary with 33.5% against Moore Capito with 27.5%, Chris Miller with 20.3%, Mac Warner with 16.0%, Mitch Roberts with 1.4%, and Kevin Christian with 1.4%. 225,301 votes counted.
For Attorney General:
Teresa Toriseva won the Democratic primary with 52.7% against Richie Robb with 47.3%. 95,273 votes counted.
J.B. McCuskey won the Republican primary with 59.9% against Mike Stuart with 40.1%. 195,016 votes counted.
For Secretary of State:
Thornton Cooper won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Kris Warner won the Republican primary with 45.9% against Doug Skaff Jr. with 21.0%, Ken Reed with 16.8%, and Brian Wood with 16.3%. 201,562 votes counted.
For Auditor:
Mary Ann Roebuck Claytor won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Mark Hunt won the Republican primary with 39.2% against Eric Householder with 25.5%, Tricia Jackson with 19.4%, and Caleb Hanna with 15.8%. 190,906 votes counted.
For Treasurer:
No candidate qualified for the Democratic primary.
Larry Pack won the Republican primary unopposed.
For Commissioner of Agriculture:
Deborah Stiles won the Democratic primary unopposed.
Incumbent Kent Leonhardt won the Republican primary with 50.8% against Joshua Kurt Higginbotham with 30.1% and Roy Ramey with 19.1%. 191,768 votes counted.
The general election for these seven statewide races in West Virginia - in addition to the contests for the U.S. House of Representatives, State Senate, and State House - will occur on Tuesday, November 5.
