Jeana Ross Wins All-Republican Runoff for Alabama State House District 27
The special election was called after Wes Kitchens (R) won a promotion to the State Senate.
The Republican runoff occurred today to finish selection of a candidate for the July special election to fill a vacancy in the Alabama House of Representatives. The runoff was called after no candidate achieved a 50%+1 majority in the primary earlier this month. Instead, the top two finishers advanced to the runoff.
The special election for Alabama State House District 27 was called after State Representative Wes Kitchens, a Republican, won a promotion to serve District 9 in the Alabama State Senate. He represented this district from November 2018 to January 2024.
Jeana Ross has been declared the winner of the Republican runoff. The race was called in her favor as she’s currently leading with 53.3% against Alan Miller with 46.7%. 3,022 votes have been counted.
Ross previously served as Secretary of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education from December 2012 to June 2020. She now works as a consultant at JRoss ECE.
Miller currently serves on the Arab City Council. He is also a branch manager at Redstone Federal Credit Union.
Ross led the first-round ballot with 39.2% against Miller with 20.6%. The rest of the divided primary included Bill Strickland with 14.9%, Bill Hancock with 13.5%, Billy Ray Todd with 8.7%, and Stacy Lee George with 3.1%.
Alabama State House District 27 covers parts of Blount, DeKalb and Marshall Counties.
The special election for this seat in the Alabama House of Representatives will occur on July 16, 2024. Unless an independent or write-in candidate qualifies for this contest in the coming days though, the special election will be cancelled and Ross will be sworn into the office.
The Alabama House of Representatives currently features 75 Republicans and 28 Democrats. The chamber has one additional vacancy, which will be filled by a special election later this year. All 105 seats will be up for regular four-year terms in November 2026.
