Andrey Rublev Rallies to Claim ATP Title at 2024 Madrid Open
The Russian prevailed from a set down in the final against Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada.
Andrey Rublev of Russia, 26, defeated Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, 23, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain (an ATP Masters 1000 event). The score in the final was 4-6, 7-5 and 7-5 in favor of Rublev.
This was the sixth match Auger-Aliassime and Rublev have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with Rublev leading 4-1 in their prior meetings. Notably, this was the second final they’ve contested. Today’s victory was the second title Rublev has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the sixteenth title of his career in single’s competition. Moreover, this was the second 1000-level title he has claimed - following the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. And finally, this was the sixth title he has taken from a clay court event.
Heading into this tournament, Rublev was ranked as the Number 8 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Auger-Aliassime carried the Number 35 designation. By winning in Madrid, Rublev has received 1,000 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Auger-Aliassime has picked up 650 points.
Carlos Alcaraz of Spain (No. 3) was the tournament’s two-time reigning champion. This year though, he lost against Rublev in the quarterfinals. The tournament allowed the Top 32 seeds to advance directly to the second round - which applied to Rublev as the seventh seed.
Rublev arrived in the final after winning against Facundo Bagnis of Argentina (No. 136), Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain (No. 28), Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands (No. 25), Alcaraz, and Taylor Fritz of the United States (No. 13). He prevailed against the event’s 2nd, 12th, 24th and 27th seeds to win the title.
In the other half of the main draw, Auger-Aliassime defeated Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan (No. 78), Adrian Mannarino of France (No. 20), Jakub Menšík of the Czech Republic (No. 74), Casper Ruud of Norway (No. 6), Jannik Sinner of Italy (No. 2), and Jiří Lehečka of the Czech Republic (No. 31). He knocked out the event’s 1st, 5th, 19th and 30th seeds to reach the final.
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, May 6. The tour will then play one tournament between May 8 and 19: the Italian Open in Rome, Italy (an ATP Masters 1000 event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Daniil Medvedev of Russia (No. 4) is the reigning champion at the Italian Open. He is looking to defend the title as the event’s second seed this year. Rublev and Auger-Aliassime will also compete in the main draw as the fourth and eighteenth seeds, respectively.
