Angela Martinez Becomes 200th Federal Judge Confirmed During Joe Biden's Presidency
Martinez will serve on the federal district court in Arizona.
The U.S. Senate today held a recorded vote to confirm one individual as an Article III federal judge. With this confirmation, 200 judges nominated by President Joe Biden have now been confirmed by the Senate. With today’s action, 155 of Biden’s judicial nominees have been approved for service on federal district courts.
In a 66-28 vote, Angela M. Martinez was confirmed as a Judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. She is Biden’s second confirmation to the 13-person court, with one additional vacancy awaiting an official nominee from the President.
Martinez assumes the Tucson-based seat currently held by James A. Soto, who intends to take senior status in July 2024. A nominee of President Barack Obama, Soto has served on this court since June 2014. Martinez was nominated to this seat on the federal judiciary by Biden in February 2024.
Martinez has had two stints as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona - first from 2005 to 2009 and again from 2015 to 2023. She was also an associate at Lewis and Roca LLP from 2002 to 2004 and at Farhang & Medcoff PLLC from 2012 to 2013. Since 2023, she has been a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.
