Casper Ruud of Norway Prevails at the Geneva Open for the Third Time
Ruud previously won the title in 2021 and 2022.
Casper Ruud of Norway, 25, defeated Tomáš Macháč of the Czech Republic, 23, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Geneva Open in Geneva, Switzerland (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 7-5 and 6-3 in favor of Ruud.
This was the second match Macháč and Ruud have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with Ruud winning their prior meeting. Today’s victory was the second title Ruud has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the twelfth title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the fifth final he has contested during the 2024 season so far - more than any other player. Moreover, this is the third time he has won in Geneva - having previously taken the title in 2021 and 2022. And finally, this was the eleventh title he has claimed from a clay court event.
Heading into this tournament, Ruud was ranked as the Number 7 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Macháč carried the Number 44 designation. By winning in Geneva, Ruud has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Macháč has picked up 165 points. Simply by reaching the final, Macháč will make his Top 35 debut in the rankings.
Nicolás Jarry of Chile (No. 16) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year though, he withdrew from the main draw after reaching the final in Rome last week. Ruud was the event’s second seed. The tournament allowed the Top 4 seeds to advance directly to the second round.
Ruud arrived in the final after winning against Sebastian Ofner of Austria (No. 45), Sebastián Báez of Argentina (No. 20), and Flavio Cobolli of Italy (No. 56). He prevailed against the event’s fifth seed to win the title.
In the other half of the main draw, Macháč defeated Jack Draper of the United Kingdom (No. 35), Nicolas Moreno de Alboran of the United States (No. 140), Alex Michelsen of the United States (No. 65), and Novak Djokovic of Serbia (No. 1). He knocked out the event’s first and eighth seeds to reach the final.
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, May 27. The tour will then play one tournament between May 26 and June 9: the French Open in Paris, France (a Grand Slam event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Djokovic is the reigning champion at the French Open. He is looking to defend the title as the event’s top seed. Moreover, both he and Jannik Sinner of Italy (No. 2) are in contention for the Number 1 singles ranking. Djokovic must reach the semifinals to have a chance at retaining the position. Ruud and Macháč will also be competing. Ruud is the competition’s seventh seed while Macháč is unseeded.
