Senate Approves Georgia N. Alexakis as Federal Judge in Illinois
Alexakis becomes the 150th judge confirmed to a district court during Biden's presidency.
The U.S. Senate today held a recorded vote to confirm one individual as an Article III federal judge. With this confirmation, 194 judges nominated by President Joe Biden have now been confirmed by the Senate. With today’s action, 150 of Biden’s judicial nominees have been approved for service on federal district courts.
In a 54-44 vote, Georgia N. Alexakis was confirmed as a Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. She is Biden’s seventh confirmation to the 23-person court, with one additional vacancy where the President’s nominee is awaiting further action from the Senate.
Alexakis assumes the Chicago-based seat currently held by Rebecca R. Pallmeyer, who intends to take senior status in August 2024. A nominee of President Bill Clinton, Pallmeyer has served on this court since October 1998 and has been Chief Judge since July 2019. Alexakis was nominated to this seat on the federal judiciary by Biden in February 2024.
Alexakis was an associate and then partner at Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar & Scott LLP in Chicago between 2008 and 2012. From 2013 to 2021, she worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. From 2021 to 2022, she was a partner at Riley Safer Holmes & Cancila LLP. In 2022, she rejoined the U.S. Attorney’s office as Chief of Appeals for the Criminal Division.
