Jannik Sinner Secures Fourth ATP Title of 2024 at Halle Open
The tour's Number 1 player competed against Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the final.
Jannik Sinner of Italy, 22, officially remains undefeated in every ATP final he’s contested in 2024 so far. Today, he prevailed against Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, 27, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Halle Open in Halle, Germany (an ATP 500 event). The score in the final was 7-6 (10-8 tiebreaker) and 7-6 (7-2 tiebreaker) in favor of Sinner.
This was the fifth match Hurkacz and Sinner have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with both players having won two of their prior meetings. Notably, this was the second final they’ve contested - with Hurkacz prevailing at the Miami Open in April 2021. Today’s victory was the fourth title Sinner has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the fourteenth title of his career in single’s competition. However, this was the first title he has claimed from a grass court event. And finally, he is the first player representing Italy to win the title in Halle.
Heading into this tournament, Sinner was ranked as the Number 1 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Hurkacz carried the Number 9 designation. By winning in Halle, Sinner has received 500 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Hurkacz has picked up 330 points.
Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan (No. 17) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year though, he lost against Christopher Eubanks of the United States (No. 44) in the second round. Meanwhile, Sinner and Hurkacz were the event’s first and fifth seeds, respectively.
Sinner arrived in the final after winning against Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands (No. 27), Fábián Marozsán of Hungary (No. 45), Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany (No. 41), and Zhang Zhizhen of China (No. 42). Notably, he didn’t face another seeded player until the final.
In the other half of the main draw, Hurkacz defeated Flavio Cobolli of Italy (No. 49), James Duckworth of Australia (No. 88), Marcos Giron of the United States (No. 53), and Alexander Zverev of Germany (No. 4). He knocked out the event’s second seed to reach the final.
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, June 24. The tour will then play two tournaments between June 23 and 29: the Mallorca Championships in Santa Ponsa, Spain (an ATP 250 event) and the Eastbourne International in Eastbourne, United Kingdom (an ATP 250 event). Both competitions will be played on grass courts.
Eubanks is the reigning champion at the Mallorca Championships. He is looking to defend the title as the event’s eighth seed this year - facing Jakub Menšík of the Czech Republic (No. 81) in the first round.
Meanwhile, Francisco Cerúndolo of Argentina (No. 26) is the reigning champion at the Eastbourne International. He too is attempting a title defense as the event’s fifth seed this year - battling Giron in the first round.
