Jannik Sinner Celebrates Second Grand Slam Title of 2024 at U.S. Open
The Italian prevailed against Taylor Fritz of the United States in the final.
Jannik Sinner of Italy, 23, defeated Taylor Fritz of the United States, 26, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 U.S. Open in New York City, New York (a Grand Slam event). The score in the final was 6-3, 6-4 and 7-5 in favor of Sinner.
This was the second Grand Slam final Sinner has contested in his single’s career so far. He prevailed at the Australian Open in January 2024. Meanwhile, this was the first Grand Slam final Fritz has reached in single’s competition. Notably, he becomes the first American to contest a Grand Slam final on the ATP Tour since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009. Roddick was also the last American player to compete in a U.S. Open final in 2006 and the last to ever win a Grand Slam title back in 2003 also at the U.S. Open.
In the head-to-head between Fritz and Sinner, both players have won a prior match - with both, interestingly, being played at the Indian Wells Open in previous years. Today’s victory was the sixth title Sinner has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the 16th title of his career in single’s competition. He remains undefeated in every final he has contested this year. Moreover, this was the 14th title he has claimed from a hard court event. Also, he becomes the first player representing Italy to ever win the title in Queens as well as the first to win multiple major titles.
Heading into this tournament, Sinner was ranked as the Number 1 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Fritz carried the Number 12 designation. By winning in New York, Sinner has received 2,000 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Fritz has picked up 1,300 points. By reaching the final, Fritz was guaranteed to return to the Top 10 - finishing at Number 7. Meanwhile, Sinner was set to retain the Number 1 ranking regardless of what happened at the final Grand Slam of the year.
Novak Djokovic of Serbia (No. 2) was the tournament’s reigning champion. He was vying for a record-breaking 25th major title but lost against Alexei Popyrin of Australia (No. 28) in the third round. Elsewhere, Sinner and Fritz were the event’s first and twelfth seeds, respectively.
Sinner arrived in the final after winning against Mackenzie McDonald of the United States (No. 140), Alex Michelsen of the United States (No. 49), Christopher O’Connell of Australia (No. 87), 14th seed Tommy Paul of the United States (No. 14), 5th seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia (No. 5), and 25th seed Jack Draper of the United Kingdom (No. 25).
In the other half of the main draw, Fritz defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina (No. 93), Matteo Berrettini of Italy (No. 44), Francisco Comesaña of Argentina (No. 108), 8th seed Casper Ruud of Norway (No. 8), 4th seed Alexander Zverev of Germany (No. 4), and 20th seed Frances Tiafoe of the United States (No. 20).
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, September 9. The group stage of the 2024 Davis Cup will occur between September 10-15. The tour will then play two tournaments from September 18-24: the Chengdu Open in Chengdu, China (an ATP 250 event) and the Hangzhou Open in Hangzhou, China (an ATP 250 event). Both competitions will be played on hard courts.
Zverev is the reigning champion at the Chengdu Open. He has decided not to compete at either competition this year. Meanwhile, the Hangzhou Open will make its official debut as an event on the tour. Andrey Rublev of Russia (No. 6) and Holger Rune of Denmark (No. 14) will compete as the top seeds.
