Defending Champion Katie Boulter Retains Title at 2024 Nottingham Open
The Brit contested the final against Karolína Plíšková of the Czech Republic
Defending champion Katie Boulter of the United Kingdom, 27, defeated Karolína Plíšková of the Czech Republic, 32, to once again win the Women’s Singles title at the 2024 Nottingham Open in Nottingham, United Kingdom (a WTA 250 event). The score in the final was 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2 in favor of Boulter.
This was the fifth match Boulter and Plíšková have played against each other on the WTA Tour - with both players having won two prior meetings. Today’s victory was the second title Boulter has won on the 2024 WTA Tour and the third title of her career in single’s competition. Notably, she remains undefeated in every WTA final she has contested so far. Moreover, this was the second title she has claimed from a grass court event.
Heading into this tournament, Boulter was ranked as the Number 30 tennis player on the 2024 WTA Tour, while Plíšková carried the Number 50 designation. By winning in Nottingham, Boulter has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Plíšková has picked up 163 points.
Boulter becomes the first player to successfully defend the title in Nottingham since the event returned to the WTA Tour in 2011. She is also only the second player to win the tournament twice in that same time frame - Ashleigh Barty of Australia won in 2012 and 2018. This year, Boulter and Plíšková were the event’s third and sixth seeds, respectively.
Boulter arrived in the final after winning against Harriet Dart of the United Kingdom (No. 92), Rebecca Marino of Canada (No. 157), Magdalena Fręch of Poland (No. 52), and Emma Raducanu of the United Kingdom (No. 209). She prevailed against the event’s fifth and sixth seeds to win the title.
In the other half of the main draw, Plíšková defeated Alycia Parks of the United States (No. 151), Heather Watson of the United Kingdom (No. 158), Ons Jabeur of Tunisia (No. 10), and Diane Parry of France (No. 64). She knocked out the event’s top seed to reach the final.
The revised rankings for the 2024 WTA Tour will be officially released on Monday, June 17. The tour will then play two tournaments between June 17 and 23: the Berlin Ladies Open in Berlin, Germany (a WTA 500 event) and the Birmingham Classic in Birmingham, United Kingdom (a WTA 250 event). Both competitions will be played on grass courts.
Petra Kvitová of the Czech Republic (No. 54) is the reigning champion at the Berlin Ladies Open. She is currently off the tour pregnant with her first child. Instead, Coco Gauff of the United States (No. 2) and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus (No. 3) are the event’s top two seeds this year.
Meanwhile, Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia (No. 13) is the reigning champion at the Birmingham Classic. She is looking to defend the title as the event’s top seed this year. She will compete against Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy (No. 43) in the first round. Boulter and Plíšková have also entered the main draw - with Boulter as the fourth seed and Plíšková unseeded. In the first round, Boulter will battle Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine (No. 46) while Plíšková will encounter Caroline Dolehide of the United States (No. 58).
