2024 Țiriac Open Rewards Márton Fucsovics With First Title in Nearly Six Years
Fucsovics contested the final against Mariano Navone of Argentina.
Márton Fucsovics of Hungary, 32, defeated Mariano Navone of Argentina, 23, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Țiriac Open in Bucharest, Romania (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 6-4 and 7-5 in favor of Fucsovics.
This was the first match Fucsovics and Navone have ever played against each other on the ATP Tour. Today’s victory was the first title Fucsovics has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the second title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the first final he has reached since the Rotterdam Open in March 2021 and the first title he has claimed since prevailing at the Geneva Open in May 2018! Both of his titles have come from clay court events.
Heading into this tournament, Navone was ranked as the Number 52 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Fucsovics carried the Number 82 designation. By winning in Bucharest, Fucsovics has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Navone has picked up 165 points. By reaching the final, Navone will make his Top 50 debut when the rankings update.
Fernando Verdasco of Spain was the tournament’s reigning champion when the event was last held in April 2016. He is currently inactive on the tour as he hasn’t played a match since August 2023. Navone was the event’s fifth seed this year.
Fucsovics arrived in the final after winning against Valentin Vacherot of Monaco (No. 136), Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands (No. 25), Corentin Moutet of France (No. 92), and Alejandro Tabilo of Chile (No. 41). He prevailed against the event’s second, fourth and fifth seeds to win the title.
In the other half of the main draw, Navone defeated Luciano Darderi of Italy (No. 64), Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil (No. 67), Francisco Cerúndolo of Argentina (No. 21), and Grégoire Barrère of France (No. 128). He knocked out the event’s top seed to reach the final.
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, April 22. The tour will then play one tournament between April 23 and May 5: the Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain (an ATP Masters 1000 event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Carlos Alcaraz of Spain (No. 3) is the two-time reigning champion at the Madrid Open. He is looking to defend the title as the event’s second seed this year.
