Matteo Berrettini's Comeback Season Produces Second Title at Swiss Open
The Italian battled Quentin Halys of France in the final.
Matteo Berrettini of Italy, 28, defeated Quentin Halys of France, 27, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Swiss Open in Gstaad, Switzerland (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 6-3 and 6-1 in favor of Berrettini.
This was the first match Berrettini and Halys have played against each other on the ATP Tour. Today’s victory was the second title Berrettini has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the ninth title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the fifth title he has claimed from a clay court event - making this his best court surface. And finally, this was the second time he has won in Gstaad - having previously prevailed in 2018.
Heading into this tournament, Berrettini was ranked as the Number 82 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Halys carried the Number 192 designation. By winning in Gstaad, Berrettini has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Halys has picked up 165 points.
Pedro Cachín of Argentina (No. 110) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year though, he lost against Berrettini in the first round. Meanwhile, Berrettini was the event’s sixth seed while Halys entered the main draw after first prevailing in the qualifying competition.
Berrettini arrived in the final after winning against Cachín, Daniel Elahi Galán of Colombia (No. 142), third seed Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada (No. 18), and top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece (No. 12).
In the other half of the main draw, Halys defeated Giovanni Fonio of Italy (No. 293), Nicolas Moreno de Alboran of the United States (No. 143), Richard Gasquet of France (No. 132), Lukáš Klein of Slovakia (No. 118), qualifier Gustavo Heide of Brazil (No. 178), and fifth seed Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany (No. 37).
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, July 22. The tour will then play three tournaments between July 21 and 28: the Austrian Open in Kitzbühel, Austria (an ATP 250 event); the Croatia Open in Umag, Croatia (an ATP 250 event); and the Atlanta Open in Atlanta, Georgia (an ATP 250 event). The competitions in Europe will be played on clay courts while the event in Atlanta will occur on hard courts.
Sebastián Báez of Argentina (No. 19) is the reigning champion at the Australian Open. He is looking to defend the title as the event’s top seed this year - earning a bye into the second round. Meanwhile, Alexei Popyrin of Australia (No. 43) is the reigning champion at the Croatia Open. He has entered the main draw this year with an unseeded slot - facing Jakub Menšík of the Czech Republic (No. 79) in the first round. And finally, Taylor Fritz of the United States (No. 11) is the reigning champion at the Atlanta Open. He has opted not to compete anywhere this week.
Berrettini is competing as an unseeded player at the Austrian Open. He is set to battle Pavel Kotov of Russia (No. 60) in the first round. Halys won’t be playing anywhere this week.
