Democrats Mai Xiong and Peter Herzberg Win Special Elections for Michigan State House
Democrats will retain control of the state's lower legislative chamber following these special elections.
Two special elections occurred today to fill vacancies in the Michigan House of Representatives. These are the first two special elections in 2024 for the state’s lower legislative chamber. The Democratic and Republican candidates were chosen through primaries in January.
The special election for Michigan State House District 13 was called after the resignation of State Representative Lori Stone, a Democrat, upon being elected Mayor of Warren. She represented this district from January 2019 to November 2023.
Democrat Mai Xiong has been declared the winner in the special election. The race was called in her favor as she’s currently leading with 65.6% against Republican Ronald Singer with 34.4%. 8,746 votes have been counted.
Xiong has represented District 11 on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners since January 2021.

Meanwhile, the special election for Michigan State House District 25 was called after the resignation of State Representative Kevin Coleman, a Democrat, upon being elected Mayor of Westland. He represented this district from January 2019 to November 2023.
