Tommy Paul Becomes Top American on ATP Tour Following Queen's Club Victory
Paul prevailed in the London final against Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.
Tommy Paul of the United States, 27, defeated Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, 22, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships in London, United Kingdom (an ATP 500 event). The score in the final was 6-1 and 7-6 (10-8 tiebreaker) in favor of Paul.
This was the first match Musetti and Paul have ever played against each other on the ATP Tour. Today’s victory was the second title Paul has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the third title of his career in single’s competition. Moreover, this was the first title he has claimed from a grass court event. And finally, he becomes the first player representing the United States to win the title in London since Sam Querrey in 2010.
Heading into this tournament, Paul was ranked as the Number 13 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Musetti carried the Number 30 designation. By winning in London, Paul has received 500 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Musetti has picked up 330 points. His victory propels Paul as the new top-ranked American on the tour - with him, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton all huddled just outside of the Top 10.
Carlos Alcaraz of Spain (No. 2) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year though, he lost against Jack Draper of the United Kingdom (No. 31) in the second round - ending a 13-match winning streak on grass. Meanwhile, Paul was the event’s fifth seed while Musetti entered the main draw with an unseeded slot.
Paul arrived in the final after winning against Sebastián Báez of Argentina (No. 19), Alejandro Tabilo of Chile (No. 24), Draper, and Sebastian Korda of the United States (No. 23). Notably, he didn’t face another seeded player throughout the competition.
In the other half of the main draw, Musetti defeated Alex de Minaur of Australia (No. 7), Brandon Nakashima of the United States (No. 63), Billy Harris of the United Kingdom (No. 162), and Jordan Thompson of Australia (No. 43). He knocked out the event’s second seed to reach the final.
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, June 24. The tour will then play two tournaments between June 23 and 29: the Mallorca Championships in Santa Ponsa, Spain (an ATP 250 event) and the Eastbourne International in Eastbourne, United Kingdom (an ATP 250 event). Both competitions will be played on grass courts.
Christopher Eubanks of the United States (No. 44) is the reigning champion at the Mallorca Championships. He is looking to defend the title as the event’s eighth seed this year - facing Jakub Menšík of the Czech Republic (No. 81) in the first round.
Meanwhile, Francisco Cerúndolo of Argentina (No. 26) is the reigning champion at the Eastbourne International. He too is attempting a title defense as the event’s fifth seed this year - battling Marcos Giron of the United States (No. 53) in the first round. Paul has also entered the main draw as the event’s second seed - which has earned him a bye into the second round.
