Donald Trump Dominates Rivals in Low Turnout 2024 Iowa Caucus
The caucus was the first contest for the 2024 Republican nomination for President.
The presidential caucus occurred today in Iowa to select 40 delegates to the 2024 Republican National Convention. As in past presidential cycles, Iowa is the first-in-the-nation caucus for the Republican primary. However, the state has moved to Super Tuesday on March 5 for the Democratic nomination.
Donald Trump has been declared the winner of the 2024 Iowa caucus. The race was called in his favor as he’s currently leading with 51.0% against Ron DeSantis with 21.2%, Nikki Haley with 19.1%, Vivek Ramaswamy with 7.7%, Ryan Binkley with 0.7%, and Asa Hutchinson with 0.2%. 110,217 votes have been counted.
The 40 RNC delegates at play in Iowa will be divided proportionally amongst the top candidates. The initial projections have Trump receiving 20, DeSantis winning 8, Haley taking 7, and Ramaswamy claiming 3. 1,215 delegates are needed to secure the presidential nomination.
Notably, Trump carried 98 of Iowa’s 99 counties. He only lost in Johnson County - home to Iowa City, the state’s fifth most populous city. Haley took the county by just one vote over Trump.
Trump served as President of the United States from January 2017 to January 2021. He is currently under criminal indictment on 91 felony charges in four separate jurisdictions and facing numerous civil lawsuits.
DeSantis has served as the Governor of Florida since January 2019. He previously represented Florida’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 2013 to September 2018.
Haley served as the Governor of South Carolina from January 2011 to January 2017 and as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from January 2017 to December 2018.
Ramaswamy was CEO of Roivant Sciences from 2014 to 2021 and Executive Chairman of Strive Asset Management from 2022 to 2023. In a speech following tonight’s results, he announced that he was suspending his presidential campaign.
In the 2020 presidential election, Trump won Iowa with a 53.09-44.89 finish against Joe Biden. That made it one of three states that backed Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 to flip to Trump in both 2016 and 2020. That victory came as Trump was losing the national contest to Biden.
