Renard Johnson Prevails in Runoff to Become Mayor of El Paso, Texas
A runoff also occurred today to elect the Mayor of Corpus Christi.
The nonpartisan runoffs occurred today to finish the elections for the Mayors of Corpus Christi and El Paso, Texas. The runoffs were ordered after no one achieved a 50%+1 majority during the November general election. Instead, the top two finishers in each city advanced to today’s contests.
In Corpus Christi, the two-term incumbent mayor ran for re-election but was kept just shy of achieving a majority on the first round against five challengers. This election covers a two-year term leading the city, with a limit of four consecutive terms someone can hold.
In El Paso, the mayoral contest was open as incumbent Mayor Oscar Leeser was term-limited and couldn’t seek a third four-year term in office. Eight candidates appeared on the general election ballot, with the top finisher ending up with only a third of the total vote.
Texas Mayoral Runoff Results:
In Corpus Christi, incumbent Mayor Paulette Guajardo won with 50.6% (14,254) against City Councilman Michael Hunter with 49.4% (13,918). 28,172 votes counted.
In El Paso, businessman Renard Johnson won with 56.1% (19,574) against City Councilman Brian Kennedy with 43.9% (15,307). 34,881 votes counted.
According to 2023 estimates, El Paso is the 23rd most populous city in the United States and the sixth most populous city in Texas. Meanwhile, Corpus Christi is the 62nd most populous city in the United States and the eighth most populous city in Texas.
