LaVon Bracy Davis Prevails in Democratic Primary for Florida Senate District 15
Two special elections were called following the death of State Senator Geraldine Thompson (D).
The Democratic and Republican primaries occurred today in Florida to select candidates for two vacancies in the state legislature - one in the State Senate and one in the State House of Representatives. Democrats had competitive races in both districts while Republicans only fielded one candidate in both.
The special election for Florida Senate District 15 was called following the death of State Senator Geraldine Thompson, a Democrat, after complications from knee surgery. She represented this district from November 2022 to February 2025. She was re-elected unopposed in November 2024.
Florida Senate District 15 resides entirely within Orange County. It includes Winter Garden, Oakland, Pine Hills, Metrowest, College Park, Parramore, Holden Heights, and the Oak Ridge area.

State Representative LaVon Bracy Davis won the Democratic primary with 43.0% (5,533) against lawyer Coretta Anthony-Smith with 28.3% (3,646), former U.S. Representative Alan Grayson with 16.7% (2,153), and former State Senator Randolph Bracy with 12.0% (1,548). 12,880 votes counted.
Nonprofit executive Willie Montague won the Republican primary unopposed.
Meanwhile, Florida’s resign-to-run law meant State Representative LaVon Bracy Davis had to leave her current seat to run for the State Senate. She has served Florida State House District 40 since November 2022. She was re-elected by a 67.5-32.5 margin against Republican Belinda Ford in November 2024.
Florida State House District 40 also resides within Orange County - taking in Ocoee, Windermere, Belle Isle, and Apopka.

Former legislative aide RaShon Young won the Democratic primary with 55.4% (2,793) against former State Representative Travaris McCurdy with 44.6% (2,246). 5,039 votes counted.
Engineer Tuan Le won the Republican primary unopposed.
Republicans currently hold supermajority control of both state legislative chambers. The State Senate features 28 Republicans, 10 Democrats and one Independent. The State House includes 87 Republicans and 32 Democrats. The special elections for both of these vacancies will occur on September 2, 2025.
