Incumbent Jean Stothert and John Ewing Advance in Race for Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska
The nonpartisan primary determined the two candidates on the general election ballot.
The primary occurred today to select the two candidates advancing to the general election for Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska. While the contest is officially nonpartisan, all five candidates on today’s ballot identified with a party and will be labeled as such.
Republican Jean Stothert has served as the Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska since June 2013. She has held the office for three consecutive terms and is currently seeking re-election to what would be a record fourth term. The top two candidates in the primary advance to the primary even if one of them achieves a 50%+1 majority of the vote today.
In the mayoral primary, Stothert and Democrat John Ewing will advance with 36.3% (27,245) and 32.7% (24,605) against Republican Mike McDonnell with 20.0% (15,039), Democrat Jasmine Harris with 10.3% (7,706), and Independent Terry Brewer with 0.8% (563). 75,158 votes have been counted.
Previously, Stothert worked for 12 years as a critical care nurse and nursing manager. She then served on the Millard Board of Education from 1997 to 2009. That was followed by a stint representing District 5 on the Omaha City Council from June 2009 to June 2013. In 2021, she was re-elected to her third term as Omaha Mayor 64.8-34.1 against Democrat RJ Neary.
Ewing has served as Douglas County Treasurer since January 2007. He was also the Democratic nominee for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District in 2012 - holding Republican incumbent Lee Terry to a 50.8-49.2 victory.
The Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska serves for a four-year term with no limits on how many terms they may serve. The Mayor also presides over a 7-member City Council. Despite also being officially nonpartisan, Democrats have controlled the City Council since the 2009 elections. Stothert flipped control of the mayor’s office to Republicans in 2013.
According to 2023 estimates, Omaha is the 40th most populous city in the United States and the most populous city in Nebraska. The general election to elect the Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska will occur on May 13, 2025.
