Cara Spencer and Incumbent Tishaura Jones Advance in St. Louis Mayoral Election
Jones and Spencer previously faced off in the 2021 mayoral contest in St. Louis, Missouri.
The nonpartisan mayoral primary occurred today in Missouri to select the two candidates advancing to the April general election for Mayor of St. Louis. The primary uses approval voting, a system where voters can vote in favor of as many candidates that appear on the ballot.
Incumbent Mayor Tishaura Jones, a Democrat, has served as Mayor of St. Louis, Missouri since April 2021. She was eligible to run for a second term in office, which she did.
Cara Spencer and Mayor Tishaura Jones will advance to the general election with 48.7% (23,785) and 23.7% (11,582) against Michael Butler with 17.8% (8,679) and Andrew Jones with 9.8% (4,757). 48,803 votes have been counted.
Spencer has represented the 8th Ward on the St. Louis Board of Aldermen since April 2015. She was the runner-up against Jones in the St. Louis mayoral election in 2021. While candidates don’t have to identify with a political party, Spencer has also campaigned as a Democrat.
Prior to becoming Mayor of St. Louis, Jones served District 63 in the Missouri House of Representatives from January 2009 to January 2013 and was Treasurer of St. Louis from January 2013 to April 2021.
The Mayor of St. Louis, Missouri serves for a four-year term with no limits on how many terms they may serve. The Mayor also presides over the 14-member Board of Aldermen.
According to 2023 estimates, St. Louis is the 76th most populous city in the United States and the second most populous city in Missouri - following Kansas City. The general election for mayor will occur on April 8, 2025.
