Qualifier Alejandro Tabilo Claims Title at 2025 Chengdu Open
Tabilo faced off against Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the final.
Alejandro Tabilo of Chile, 28, defeated Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, 23, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2025 Chengdu Open in Chengdu, China (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 6-3, 2-6 and 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) in favor of Tabilo.
This was the first match Musetti and Tabilo have ever played against each other on the ATP Tour. Today’s victory was the first title Tabilo has won on the 2025 ATP Tour and the third title of his career in single’s competition. All of his titles have come from 250-level tournaments. This was the second title he has claimed from a hard court event. Notably, he becomes the second qualifier to win a title in 2025 - following Jenson Brooksby of the United States in Houston. And finally, he becomes the first player representing Chile to win the title in Chengdu since the event joined the tour in 2016.
Heading into this tournament, Musetti was ranked as the Number 9 tennis player on the 2025 ATP Tour, while Tabilo carried the Number 112 designation. By winning in Chengdu, Tabilo has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Musetti has picked up 165 points.
Shang Juncheng of China (No. 138) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year as a wildcard, he lost in the second round against fourth seed Brandon Nakashima of the United States (No. 33). Furthermore, Musetti was the event’s first seed while Tabilo entered the main draw after first prevailing in the qualifying round. The top four seeds received byes into the second round of competition.
Tabilo arrived in the final after winning against Te Rigele of China (No. 555), Lloyd Harris of South Africa (No. 258), Jordan Thompson of Australia (No. 78), second seed Luciano Darderi of Italy (No. 30), Christopher O’Connell of Australia (No. 103), and Nakashima. This was the fifth ATP final he has competed in. All have been at 250-level events.
In the other half of the main draw, Musetti defeated Dino Prižmić of Croatia (No. 121), qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia (No. 114), and Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan (No. 96). This was the seventh ATP final he has contested and his fourth at a 250-level event. He previously reached the final in Chengdu last year.
The revised rankings for the 2025 ATP Tour were released yesterday, September 22. The tour will next play two tournaments from September 24-October 1: the China Open in Beijing, China (an ATP 500 event) and the Japan Open in Tokyo, Japan (an ATP 500 event). Both competitions will be played on hard courts.
Carlos Alcaraz of Spain (No. 1) is the reigning champion at the China Open. He has opted to play in Tokyo instead this year. He will compete as the first seed. In the first round, he will battle Sebastián Báez of Argentina (No. 41). Arthur Fils of France (No. 23) is the reigning champion at the Japan Open. He will not be playing anywhere this week due to a back injury.
And finally, Musetti and Tabilo are also set to compete at these upcoming events. At the China Open, Musetti will be the fourth seed. In the first round, he will compete against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France (No. 36). Meanwhile, Tabilo will play at the Japan Open as an unseeded player. In the first round, he will face off against Zizou Bergs of Belgium (No. 46).
