Alejandro Tabilo of Chile Wins His First ATP Title at 2024 Auckland Open
Tabilo entered the main draw of this year's competition as a qualifier.
Alejandro Tabilo, 26, of Chile defeated Taro Daniel, 30, of Japan to claim the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Auckland Open in Auckland, New Zealand (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 6-2 and 7-5 in favor of Tabilo.
This was the first match Daniel and Tabilo have ever played against each other on the ATP Tour. Today’s victory is the first title Tabilo has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the first title of his career in single’s competition. He now becomes the first player to win his first ATP title during the 2024 season.
Heading into this tournament, Daniel was ranked as the Number 74 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Tabilo carried the Number 82 designation. By winning in Auckland, Tabilo has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Daniel has picked up 150 points.
Richard Gasquet of France (No. 76) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year though, he lost in the first round to Arthur Fils of France (No. 35).
Tabilo entered the main draw upon prevailing during the qualifying competition. He won against Isaac Becroft of Australia (No. 845) and Patrick Kypson of the United States (No. 186). In the main draw, he defeated Borna Gojo of Croatia (No. 91), Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands (No. 59), Cameron Norrie of the United Kingdom (No. 19), and Fils.
Meanwhile, Daniel arrived in the final after winning against Aleksandar Vukic of Australia (No. 63), Max Purcell of Australia (No. 45), Alexandre Müller of France (No. 79), and Ben Shelton of the United States (No. 16).
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, January 15. Both the ATP and WTA Tours will then play the first Grand Slam of the season from January 14 to 28: the Australian Open in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament will be played on hard courts.
Novak Djokovic of Serbia (No. 1) is the reigning champion in the Men’s Singles competition. He is returning to the main draw as this year’s top seed. He holds the record for most wins at the Australian Open with 10. In the Women’s Singles event, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus (No. 2 on the 2024 WTA Tour) is the reigning champion. She is looking to defend the title as the tournament’s second seed.
