Amanda Anisimova Scores Biggest Title of Her Career at 2025 Qatar Open
The American won her first WTA 1000 title by beating Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia in the final.
Amanda Anisimova of the United States, 23, defeated Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia, 27, to win the Women’s Singles title at the 2025 Qatar Open in Doha, Qatar (a WTA 1000 event). The score in the final was 6-4 and 6-3 in favor of Anisimova.
This was the second match Anisimova and Ostapenko have played against each other on the WTA Tour - with Ostapenko winning their prior meeting. Today’s victory was the first title Anisimova has won on the 2025 WTA Tour and the third title of her career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the first title she has claimed since prevailing at the Melbourne Summer Set in January 2022! Moreover, this was the second title she has taken from a hard court event and her first from a 1000-level tournament. That makes this the biggest title of her career. And finally, she becomes the second player representing the United States to win the title in Doha - joining Monica Seles in 2002.
Heading into this tournament, Ostapenko was ranked as the Number 37 tennis player on the 2025 WTA Tour, while Anisimova carried the Number 41 designation. By winning in Doha, Anisimova has received 1,000 points in the overall rankings. As a result, she will make her Top 20 debut - landing at Number 18. Meanwhile, Ostapenko has picked up 650 points.
Iga Świątek of Poland (No. 2) was the tournament’s three-time reigning champion. This year as the second seed, she lost in the semifinals against Ostapenko - who strikingly remains undefeated in her five meetings against the former Number 1 player. Meanwhile, both Ostapenko and Anisimova entered the main draw as unseeded players. The final was the first to be contested by two unseeded players since 2015. Anisimova becomes the first unseeded player to win the title since Elise Mertens of Belgium in 2019.
Anisimova arrived in the final after winning against Victoria Azarenka of Belarus (No. 30), ninth seed Paula Badosa of Spain (No. 10), Leylah Fernandez of Canada (No. 27), Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine (No. 21), and Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia (No. 26). This was the fifth WTA final she has competed in and her second at a 1000-level event.
In the other half of the main draw, Ostapenko defeated qualifier Aoi Ito of Japan (No. 120), 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova of Russia (No. 23), fourth seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy (No. 4), Ons Jabeur of Tunisia (No. 35), and Świątek. This was the 17th WTA final she has contested and her third at a 1000-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 WTA Tour will be officially released on Monday, February 17. The tour will then play one tournament from February 16-22: the Dubai Tennis Championships in Dubai, UAE (a WTA 1000 event). The competition will be played on hard courts.
Paolini is the reigning champion at the Dubai Tennis Championships. She is looking to defend the title as the fourth seed at this year’s event - receiving a bye into the second round. Both Anisimova and Ostapenko have also entered the main draw as unseeded players. In the first round, Anisimova will battle fellow American McCartney Kessler (No. 55) while Ostapenko will face off against qualifier Moyuka Uchijima of Japan (No. 63).
