Andrey Rublev of Russia Prevails at 2024 Hong Kong Open
The Russian prevailed against Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland in the final.
Andrey Rublev, 26, of Russia defeated Emil Ruusuvuori, 24, of Finland to claim the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Hong Kong Open in Hong Kong, China (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 6-4 and 6-4 in favor of Rublev.
This was the fourth match Rublev and Ruusuvuori have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with Rublev leading their prior meetings 2-1. Today’s victory is the first title Rublev has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the fifteenth title of his career in single’s competition.
Heading into this tournament, Rublev was ranked as the Number 5 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Ruusuvuori carried the Number 69 designation. By winning in Hong Kong, Rublev has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Ruusuvuori has picked up 150 points.
The Hong Kong Open hasn’t been held on the ATP Tour since 2002. Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain was the previous champion. He retired from professional tennis in 2012.
The Hong Kong Open allowed the top four seeded players to advance directly to the second round - which applied to Rublev. He arrived in the final after winning against Liam Broady of the United Kingdom (No. 108), Arthur Fils of France (No. 36), and Juncheng Shang of China (No. 183).
In the other half of the main draw, Ruusuvuori defeated Benjamin Bonzi of France (No. 73), Karen Khachanov of Russia (No. 15), Pavel Kotov of Russia (No. 67), and Sebastian Ofner of Austria (No. 43).
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, January 8. The tour will then play two tournaments from January 8 to 13: the Adelaide International in Adelaide, Australia (an ATP 250 event) and the Auckland Open in Auckland, New Zealand (an ATP 250 event). Both tournaments will be played on hard courts.
Kwon Soon-woo of South Korea (No. 196) is the reigning champion at the Adelaide International. However, he is not competing at any event this week. Meanwhile, Richard Gasquet of France (No. 76) is the reigning champion at the Auckland Open. He has received a wild card entry into this year’s tournament.
