Former Rep. Anthony Brindisi Becomes Federal Judge in New York
Brindisi becomes the 227th federal judge confirmed by the U.S. Senate during Joe Biden's presidency.
The U.S. Senate today held a recorded vote to confirm one individual as an Article III federal judge. With this confirmation, 227 judges nominated by President Joe Biden have now been confirmed by the Senate. With today’s action, 179 of Biden’s judicial nominees have been approved for service on federal district courts.
In a 50-49 vote, Anthony J. Brindisi was confirmed as a Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. He is Biden’s second confirmation to the 5-person court, with one additional vacancy where the President’s nominating will receive a confirmation vote in the Senate later today. Once commissioned, he will become the youngest judge serving on this court.
Brindisi will assume the Utica-based seat currently held by David N. Hurd, who intends to take senior status upon swearing in of his successor. A nominee of President Bill Clinton, Hurd has served on this court since September 1999. Brindisi was nominated to this seat on the federal judiciary by Biden in July 2024.
From 2004 to 2018 and again from 2021 to 2022, Brindisi worked at the firm his father founded - Brindisi, Murad and Brindisi-Pearlman LLP - serving as a partner from 2008 to 2014 and resuming that role upon his return. He then assumed elected office representing District 119 in the New York State Assembly from September 2011 to January 2019 and then serving New York’s 22nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 2019 to January 2021. Since May 2022, he has been a Judge on the New York State Court of Claims.
