Arielle Roth and John Hurley Confirmed to Commerce and Treasury Positions
One Democrat backed Roth while Hurley was approved in a party-line vote.
The U.S. Senate today held recorded votes to confirm two individuals nominated by President Donald Trump to serve in the executive branch of government - specifically in the U.S. Departments of Commerce and the Treasury.
In a 52-41 vote, Arielle Roth was confirmed as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information. The position has been held by an acting official since January 2025, when Alan Davidson resigned after serving since January 2022.
Democrat John Fetterman of Pennsylvania joined 51 Republicans in approving Roth’s nomination. 39 Democrats and two Independents voted in opposition. Senators Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) did not vote.
Roth was nominated to this position by Trump in February 2025. Since January 2023, she has worked as Policy Director to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
From September 2017 to April 2021, Roth worked at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) - first as legal advisor at the Wireline Competition Bureau and then as wireline advisor to Commissioner Michael O’Rielly. She then moved to the U.S. Senate as legislative counsel to Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri from August 2021 to January 2023.
In a 51-47 vote, John Hurley was confirmed as Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. The position has been held by an acting official since January 2025, when Brian E. Nelson resigned after serving since December 2021.
51 Republicans approved Hurley’s nomination. All 45 Democrats and two Independents voted in opposition. Senators McConnell and Mullin did not vote.
Hurley was nominated to this position by Trump in February 2025. A U.S. Army veteran, he previously served on Trump’s Intelligence Advisory Board from 2018 to 2021.
Hurley began his professional career as an analyst and portfolio manager at Fidelity Investments and managing partner of Bowman Capital management. He then founded Cavalry Asset Management in 2003 - where he currently serves as its managing partner. He is also a managing member of TGK Ventures. Furthermore, he is a long-time lecturer in finance at Stanford Graduate School of Business.
