2021 and 2023 Champion Aryna Sabalenka Triumphs Again at 2025 Madrid Open
Sabalenka prevailed against Coco Gauff of the United States in the final.
Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, 26, defeated Coco Gauff of the United States, 21, to win the Women’s Singles title at the 2025 Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain (a WTA 1000 event). The score in the final was 6-3 and 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker in favor of Sabalenka.
This was the tenth match Gauff and Sabalenka have played against each other on the WTA Tour - with Gauff leading 5-4 in their head-to-head. Moreover, this was the second final they have contested. Previously, Gauff prevailed against Sabalenka at the U.S. Open in September 2023.
Today’s victory was the third title Sabalenka has won on the 2025 WTA Tour and the 20th title of her career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the third title she has claimed from a clay court event and her ninth from a 1000-level tournament. And finally, this was the third time she has won the title in Madrid. She previously claimed the title in 2021 and 2023. She was also the runner-up in 2024.
Heading into this tournament, Sabalenka was ranked as the Number 1 tennis player on the 2025 WTA Tour, while Gauff carried the Number 4 designation. By winning in Madrid, Sabalenka has received 1,000 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Gauff has picked up 650 points.
Iga Świątek of Poland (No. 2) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year as the second seed, she lost in the semifinals against Gauff. Furthermore, Sabalenka and Gauff were the event’s first and fourth seeds, respectively. The Top 32 seeds received a bye into the second round of competition.
Sabalenka was never in danger of losing the Number 1 designation on the WTA Tour this week. However, three players were vying for the Number 2 slot - Świątek, Gauff and Jessica Pegula of the United States (No. 3). By reaching the final, Gauff was guaranteed to return to the Number 3 position. She needed to win the title to tie her career-best ranking at Number 2. Instead, Świątek will continue to hold the spot.
Sabalenka arrived in the final after winning against qualifier Anna Blinkova of Russia (No. 76), 28th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium (No. 26), Peyton Stearns of the United States (No. 44), 24th seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine (No. 36), and 17th seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine (No. 17). This was the 37th WTA final she has contested and her 13th at a 1000-level event. Moreover, this was the sixth final she has reached during the 2025 season so far - extending her lead with the most final appearances this year.
In the other half of the main draw, Gauff defeated Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine (No. 46), Ann Li of the United States (No. 62), Belinda Bencic of Switzerland (No. 42), seventh seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia (No. 7), and Świątek. This was the 11th WTA final she has competed in and her third at a 1000-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 WTA Tour will be officially released on Monday, May 5. The tour will then play one tournament from May 6-18: the Italian Open in Rome, Italy (a WTA 1000 event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Świątek is the reigning champion at the Madrid Open. She will be attempting a title defense as the event’s second seed this year. Meanwhile, Sabalenka and Gauff will also be playing as the event’s first and third seeds, respectively. All 32 seeds will advance directly to the second round of competition.
