Aryna Sabalenka Wins 2025 Miami Open Without Dropping a Set
Sabalenka faced off against Jessica Pegula of the United States in the final.
In a rematch of the 2024 Cincinnati and U.S. Open finals, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, 26, defeated Jessica Pegula of the United States, 31, to win the Women’s Singles title at the 2025 Miami Open in Miami Gardens, Florida (a WTA 1000 event). The score in the final was 7-5 and 6-2 in favor of Sabalenka.
This was the ninth match Pegula and Sabalenka have played against each other on the WTA Tour - with Sabalenka leading 6-2 in their head-to-head. Moreover, this was the third final they’ve played each other in, with Sabalenka winning all of them. Today’s victory was the second title Sabalenka has won on the 2025 WTA Tour and the 19th title of her career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the 17th title she has claimed from a hard court event and her eighth from a 1000-level tournament. Moreover, she becomes the second player representing Belarus to win the title in Miami since the event joined the tour in 1985 - following Victoria Azarenka in 2009, 2011 and 2016.
Heading into this tournament, Sabalenka was ranked as the Number 1 tennis player on the 2025 WTA Tour, while Pegula carried the Number 4 designation. By winning in Miami, Sabalenka has received 1,000 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Pegula has picked up 650 points. These results help solidify their current positions in the rankings.
Danielle Collins of the United States (No. 15) was the tournament's reigning champion. This year as the 14th seed, she lost in the fourth round against Sabalenka. Meanwhile, Sabalenka and Pegula were the event’s first and fourth seeds, respectively. All 32 seeds advanced directly to the second round of competition.
Sabalenka arrived in the final after winning against Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria (No. 64), qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania (No. 102), Collins, Zheng Qinwen of China (No. 9), and Jasmine Paolini of Italy (No. 7). This was the 35th WTA final she has contested and her 12th at a 1000-level event. She won the title without dropping a set.
In the other half of the main draw, Pegula defeated qualifier Bernarda Pera of the United States (No. 84), 32nd seed Anna Kalinskaya of Russia (No. 33), 23rd seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine (No. 29), Emma Raducanu of the United Kingdom (No. 60), and wildcard Alexandra Eala of the Philippines (No. 140). This was the 17th WTA final she has competed in and her sixth at a 1000-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 WTA Tour will be officially released on Monday, March 31. The tour will then play two tournaments from March 30-April 6: the Charleston Open in Charleston, South Carolina (a WTA 500 event) and the Copa Colsanitas in Bogotá, Colombia (a WTA 250 event). These competitions will kick off the 2025 clay court season.
Collins is also the reigning champion at the Charleston Open. She is looking to defend the title as the event’s seventh seed this year. All 16 seeds receive a bye into the second round of competition. Meanwhile, Camila Osorio of Colombia (No. 54) is the reigning champion at the Copa Colsanitas. She is also attempting a title defense as the event’s second seed this year. In the first round, she will play against wildcard Mariana Higuita of Colombia (No. 1,077).
Furthermore, Pegula will be playing this week in Charleston as the top seed. However, Sabalenka will be taking the next two weeks off. She will next compete in Stuttgart in mid-April.
