Brian Murphy Approved as Federal Judge in Massachusetts
Murphy becomes the 223rd federal judge confirmed by the U.S. Senate during Joe Biden's presidency.
The U.S. Senate today held a recorded vote to confirm one individual as an Article III federal judge. With this confirmation, 223 judges nominated by President Joe Biden have now been confirmed by the Senate. With today’s action, 175 of Biden’s judicial nominees have been approved for service on federal district courts.
In a 47-45 vote, Brian Edward Murphy was confirmed as a Judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He is Biden’s fifth confirmation to the 13-person court, with one upcoming vacancy where no nominee has been announced by the President.
Murphy assumes the Boston-based seat currently held by Patti B. Saris, who intends to take senior status upon the swearing in of her successor. A nominee of President Bill Clinton, Saris has served on this court since November 1993 and was the Chief Judge from 2013 to 2019. Murphy was nominated to this seat on the federal judiciary by Biden in March 2024.
From 2007 to 2009, Murphy served as a public defender in the Superior Court Division in Worcester, Massachusetts. From 2009 to 2011, he was an associate at Todd & Weld LLP in Boston. Since 2011, he has been a partner at Murphy & Rudolf LLP in Worcester.
