Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Jannik Sinner to Win 2025 Italian Open
This was the first ATP 1000 final the tour's top two players have faced off in.
Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, 22, defeated Jannik Sinner of Italy, 23, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2025 Italian Open in Rome, Italy (an ATP 1000 event). The score in the final was 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) and 6-1 in favor of Alcaraz.
This was the eleventh match Alcaraz and Sinner have played against each other on the ATP - with Alcaraz leading 6-4 in their head-to-head. Moreover, this was the third final they’ve faced each other in. Both players have won one of their final appearances against the other. However, this is the first time they’ve collided in the final of a 1000-level event or higher.
Today’s victory was the third title Alcaraz has won on the 2025 ATP Tour and the 19th title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the tenth title he has claimed from a clay court event and his seventh from a 1000-level tournament. Moreover, he becomes the first player representing Spain to win the title in Rome since Rafael Nadal prevailed for the tenth time in 2021.
Heading into this tournament, Sinner was ranked as the Number 1 tennis player on the 2025 ATP Tour, while Alcaraz carried the Number 3 designation. By winning in Rome, Alcaraz has received 1,000 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Sinner has picked up 650 points.
Alexander Zverev of Germany (No. 2) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year as the second seed, he lost in the quarterfinals against Lorenzo Musetti of Italy (No. 9). Furthermore, Sinner and Alcaraz were the event’s first and third seeds, respectively. All 32 seeds received byes into the second round of competition.
The Italian Open marked the return of Sinner to the ATP Tour since prevailing again at the 2025 Australian Open. He served a three-month suspension to resolve his case with the World Anti-Doping Agency. Despite being off the tour, the Italian player was never at risk of losing the Number 1 designation.
Alcaraz arrived in the final after winning against qualifier Dušan Lajović of Serbia (No. 131), Laslo Djere of Serbia (No. 64), 23rd seed Karen Khachanov of Russia (No. 24), fifth seed Jack Draper of the United Kingdom (No. 5), and eighth seed Musetti. This was the 25th ATP final he has contested and his eighth at a 1000-level event. He has won more titles (3) and logged more final appearances (4) than any other player during the 2025 season so far.
In the other half of the main draw, Sinner defeated Mariano Navone of Argentina (No. 99), lucky loser Jesper de Jong of the Netherlands (No. 93), 17th seed Francisco Cerúndolo of Argentina (No. 18), sixth seed Casper Ruud of Norway (No. 7), and 11th seed Tommy Paul of the United States (No. 12). This was the 25th ATP final he has competed in and his seventh at a 1000-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, May 19. The tour will then play two tournaments from May 18-24: the Hamburg Open in Hamburg, Germany (an ATP 500 event) and the Geneva Open in Geneva, Switzerland (an ATP 250 event). Both competition will be played on clay courts.
Arthur Fils of France (No. 14) is the reigning champion at the Hamburg Open. He will not be attempting a title defense this year. Meanwhile, Ruud is the reigning champion at the Geneva Open. He has withdrawn from the main draw following his quarterfinal run in Rome.
And finally, Alcaraz and Sinner will both be taking the week off in preparation for the 2025 French Open - the year’s second Grand Slam event.
