Casper Ruud Achieves His First ATP 1000 Title at 2025 Madrid Open
The Norwegian player battled Jack Draper of the United Kingdom in the final.
Casper Ruud of Norway, 26, defeated Jack Draper of the United Kingdom, 23, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2025 Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain (an ATP 1000 event). The score in the final was 7-5, 3-6, and 6-4 in favor of Ruud.
This was the first match Draper and Ruud have ever played against each other on the ATP Tour. Today’s victory was the first title Ruud has won on the 2025 ATP Tour and the 13th title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the 12th title he has claimed from a clay court event and his first from a 1000-level tournament. That makes this the biggest title of his career to date. Moreover, he becomes the first player representing Norway to win the title in Madrid since the event joined the tour in 2002. He’s actually the first Norwegian player to ever win an ATP 1000 title since the category was introduced in 1990!
Heading into this tournament, Draper was ranked as the Number 6 tennis player on the 2025 ATP Tour, while Ruud carried the Number 15 designation. By winning in Madrid, Ruud has received 1,000 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Draper has picked up 650 points.
Andrey Rublev of Russia (No. 8) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year as the seventh seed, he lost in the third round against Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan (No. 75). Furthermore, Draper and Ruud were the event’s fifth and 14th seeds, respectively. All 32 seeds received byes into the second round of competition. Based on the results, Draper will make his Top 5 debut while Ruud will return to the Top 10 and Rublev will drop out of the Top 10.
Ruud arrived in the final after winning against Arthur Rinderknech of France (No. 76), 23rd seed Sebastian Korda of the United States (No. 24), third seed Taylor Fritz of the United States (No. 4), Daniil Medvedev of Russia (No. 10), and 20th seed Francisco Cerúndolo of Argentina (No. 21). This was the 25th ATP final he has competed in and his third at a 1000-level event. That means he prevailed against three Top 10 players to win the title.
In the other half of the main draw, Draper defeated Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands (No. 34), 30th seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy (No. 31), 11th seed Tommy Paul of the United States (No. 12), Matteo Arnaldi of Italy (No. 44), and tenth seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy (No. 11). This was the seventh ATP final he has contested and his second at a 1000-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, May 5. The tour will then play one tournament from May 6-18: the Italian Open in Rome, Italy (an ATP 1000 event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Alexander Zverev of Germany (No. 2) is the reigning champion at the Italian Open. He will be attempting a title defense as the event’s second seed this year. Notably, the tournament will mark Number 1 player Jannik Sinner of Italy’s return to the tour following his three month suspension. He will compete as the top seed at the event in his home country.
And finally, Draper and Ruud will also be playing this week. They are set as the fifth and sixth seeds in Rome, respectively. All 32 seeds will advance directly to the second round of competition.
