General Charles Q. Brown Jr. Confirmed to Four-Year Term as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
Brown will succeed General Mark A. Milley, whose term ends on September 30, 2023.
The U.S. Senate today held a recorded vote to confirm one individual nominated by President Joe Biden to serve in a command post of the U.S. Military - specifically on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In a 83-11 vote, General Charles Q. Brown Jr. was confirmed as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for a term expiring September 30, 2027. He assumes the posting currently held by General Mark A. Milley, who has served since October 1, 2019 with a term ending September 30, 2023.
Brown was nominated to this post by Biden in May 2023. He will become the fifth General from the U.S. Air Force to be elevated to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the first since General Richard Myers, who served from October 2001 to September 2005. Moreover, Brown will become the second Black man to serve in the role following General Colin Powell, who served from October 1989 to September 1993.
Entering the U.S. Air Force in 1984, Brown has commanded the Pacific Air Forces, U.S. Air Forces Central Command, 31st Fighter Wing, 8th Fighter Wing, U.S. Air Force Weapons School, and 78th Fighter Squadron. Since August 2020, he has served as the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force.
