Italian Flavio Cobolli Wins First ATP 500 Title at 2025 Hamburg Open
Cobolli faced off against Andrey Rublev of Russia in the final.
Flavio Cobolli of Italy, 23, defeated Andrey Rublev of Russia, 27, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2025 Hamburg Open in Hamburg, Germany (an ATP 500 event). The score in the final was 6-2 and 6-4 in favor of Cobolli.
This was the first match Cobolli and Rublev have ever played against each other on the ATP Tour. Today’s victory was the second title Cobolli has won on the 2025 ATP Tour and the second title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the second title he has claimed from a clay court event and his first from a 500-level tournament. That makes this the biggest title of his career to date. Moreover, he becomes the fourth player representing Italy to win the title in Hamburg during the Open Era - joining Paolo Bertolucci in 1977, Fabio Fognini in 2013, and Lorenzo Musetti in 2022.
Heading into this tournament, Rublev was ranked as the Number 17 tennis player on the 2025 ATP Tour, while Cobolli carried the Number 35 designation. By winning in Hamburg, Cobolli has received 500 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Rublev has picked up 330 points.
Arthur Fils of France (No. 14) was the tournament’s reigning champion. He opted not to compete again this year. Furthermore, Rublev was the event’s third seed while Cobolli entered the main draw as an unseeded player.
Cobolli arrived in the final after winning against lucky loser Vitaliy Sachko of Ukraine (No. 235), fifth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain (No. 26), Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain (No. 57), and Tomás Martín Etcheverry of Argentina (No. 55). This was the third ATP final he has competed in and his second at a 500-level event.
In the other half of the main draw, Rublev defeated Damir Džumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina (No. 69), wildcard Justin Engel of Germany (No. 333), Luciano Darderi of Italy (No. 45), and sixth seed Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada (No. 30). This was the 28th ATP final he has contested and his 11th at a 500-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, May 26. The tour will then play one tournament from May 25-June 8: the French Open in Paris, France (a Grand Slam event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Carlos Alcaraz of Spain (No. 2) is the reigning champion at the French Open. He is looking to defend the title as the event’s second seed this year. In the first round, he will face off against qualifier Giulio Zeppieri of Italy (No. 306).
Rublev will also be contesting the Grand Slam in Paris as the 17th seed. Meanwhile, Cobolli has entered the main draw as an unseeded player. In the first round, Rublev will battle Lloyd Harris of South Africa (No. 226) while Cobolli will play lucky loser Marin Čilić of Croatia (No. 104).
