Jakub Menšík Claims First Career Title at 2025 Miami Open
The Czech player defeated Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the final.
Jakub Menšík of the Czech Republic, 19, defeated Novak Djokovic of Serbia, 37, to win the Men’s Singles titles at the 2025 Miami Open in Miami Gardens, Florida (an ATP Masters 1000 event). The score in the final was 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker) and 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker) in favor of Menšík.
This was the second match Djokovic and Menšík have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with Djokovic winning their prior meeting. Today’s victory was the the first title Menšík has won on the 2025 ATP Tour and the first title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, he becomes the fourth player to win his first career title during the 2025 so far - joining João Fonseca of Brazil, Tomáš Macháč of the Czech Republic, and Alexandre Müller of France. That means his maiden title was won at a hard court event at the 1000-level. Moreover, he becomes the first player representing the Czech Republic to win the title in Miami since Ivan Lendl prevailed for the second time in 1989!
Heading into this tournament, Djokovic was ranked as the Number 5 tennis player on the 2025 ATP Tour, while Menšík carried the Number 54 designation. By winning in Miami, Menšík has received 1,000 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Djokovic has picked up 650 points. By taking the title, Menšík will make his Top 25 debut and achieve a new career best ranking at Number 24.
Jannik Sinner of Italy (No. 1) was the tournament’s reigning champion. He couldn’t defend the title due to being suspended for a positive steroid test. Furthermore, Djokovic was the event’s fourth seed while Menšík entered the main draw as an unseeded player. All 32 seeds advanced directly to the second round of competition.
Menšík arrived in the final after winning against Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain (No. 50), sixth seed Jack Draper of the United Kingdom (No. 7), Roman Safiullin of Russia (No. 71), 20th seed Macháč, 17th seed Arthur Fils of France (No. 18), and third seed Taylor Fritz of the United States (No. 4). This was the second ATP final he has competed in and his first at a 1000-level event. To win the title, he prevailed against three Top 10 players this week.
In the other half of the main draw, Djokovic defeated Rinky Hijikata of Australia (No. 86), lucky loser Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina (No. 65), 15th seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy (No. 16), 24th seed Sebastian Korda of the United States (No. 25), and 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria (No. 15). This was the 142nd ATP final he has contested and his 60th at a 1000-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, March 31. The tour will then play three tournaments from March 31-April 6: the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, Texas (an ATP 250 event), the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakesh, Morocco (an ATP 250 event), and the Romanian Open in Bucharest, Romania (an ATP 250 event). These competitions will kick off the 2025 clay court season.
Ben Shelton of the United States (No. 14) is the reigning champion at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships. He will not be competing anywhere this week. Meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini of Italy (No. 30) is the reigning champion at the Grand Prix Hassan II. He too will not be attempting a title defense this year. Furthermore, Márton Fucsovics of Hungary (No. 90) is the reigning champion at the Romanian Open. He will playing again this year as an unseeded player. In the first round, he will face off against Luca Nardi of Italy (No. 84).
And finally, Djokovic and Menšík will be taking the week off. They will return to action the following week in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France.
