Jannik Sinner Triumphs Against Carlos Alcaraz for First Wimbledon Title
Sinner reverses the results from the French Open final six weeks ago.
Jannik Sinner of Italy, 23, defeated two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, 22, to win the Gentlemen’s Singles title at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships in London, United Kingdom (a Grand Slam event). The score in the final was 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4 in favor of Sinner.
This was the 13th match Alcaraz and Sinner have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with Alcaraz leading 8-4 in their head-to-head. This was also the fifth final they’ve faced off in - with Alcaraz also leading 3-1. 2025 has now produced two battles between Alcaraz and Sinner at Grand Slam finals. The two join Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as the only players to contest both the French Open and Wimbledon finals in the same season.
Today’s victory was the second title Sinner has won on the 2025 ATP Tour and the 20th title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the second title he has claimed from a grass court event and his fourth from a Grand Slam competition. At the 2025 French Open, Alcaraz ended Sinner’s undefeated run in major finals. Today, Sinner got his revenge by finishing Alcaraz’s own undefeated record in major finals. Moreover, he becomes the first player representing Italy to ever win the Wimbledon title.
Heading into this tournament, Sinner was ranked as the Number 1 tennis player on the 2025 ATP Tour, while Alcaraz carried the Number 2 designation. By winning in London, Sinner has received 2,000 points in the overall rankings. He will now celebrate 58 consecutive weeks with the tour’s top ranking. Meanwhile, Alcaraz has picked up 1,300 points.
All three Grand Slam events of the 2025 season so far have produced championship matches between the tour’s top two players. At the Australian Open in January, Sinner prevailed against Alexander Zverev of Germany. At the French Open in June, Alcaraz defended the title in his first ever major final battle against Sinner. At 23 years and 318 days, Sinner has become the second-youngest player (following Jim Courier) to reach all four major finals and the youngest player ever to reach four consecutive finals in the Open Era.
Sinner arrived in the final after winning against Luca Nardi of Italy (No. 95), Aleksandar Vukic of Australia (No. 93), Pedro Martínez of Spain (No. 52), 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria (No. 21), 10th seed Ben Shelton of the United States (No. 10), and sixth seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia (No. 6). This was the 27th ATP final he has contested and his fifth at a Grand Slam tournament.
In the other half of the main draw, Alcaraz defeated Fabio Fognini of Italy (No. 138), qualifier Oliver Tarvet of the United Kingdom (No. 733), Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany (No. 125), 14th seed Andrey Rublev of Russia (No. 14), Cameron Norrie of the United Kingdom (No. 61), and fifth seed Taylor Fritz of the United States (No. 5). This was the 28th ATP final he has competed in and his sixth at a Grand Slam tournament.
The revised rankings for the 2025 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, July 14. The tour will then play three tournaments from July 14-20: the Los Cabos Open in Los Cabos, Mexico (an ATP 250 event), the Swedish Open in Båstad, Sweden (an ATP 250 event), and the Swiss Open in Gstaad, Switzerland (an ATP 250 event). The competition in Los Cabos will be played on hard courts. Meanwhile, the events in Båstad and Gstaad will be contested on clay courts.
Jordan Thompson of Australia (No. 44) is the reigning champion at the Los Cabos Open. He has withdrawn from the main draw of this year’s event. Meanwhile, Nuno Borges of Portugal (No. 37) is the reigning champion at the Swedish Open. He will be attempting a title defense as the third seed at this year’s tournament. The top four seeds receive byes into the second round of competition. Furthermore, Matteo Berrettini of Italy (No. 35) is the reigning champion at the Swiss Open. He has also withdrawn from the event’s main draw this year.
And finally, Alcaraz and Sinner will be taking the next two weeks off the tour. They will both return to action at the end of the month at the Canadian Open in Toronto.
