Jeļena Ostapenko Overpowers Aryna Sabalenka for 2025 Stuttgart Open Title
This was the first clay court title Ostapenko has won since the 2017 French Open.
Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia, 27, defeated Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, 26, to win the Women’s Singles title at the 2025 Stuttgart Open in Stuttgart, Germany (a WTA 500 event). The score in the final was 6-4 and 6-1 in favor of Ostapenko.
This was the fourth match Ostapenko and Sabalenka have played against each other on the WTA Tour - with Sabalenka winning all of their prior meetings. Today’s victory was the first title Ostapenko has won on the 2025 WTA Tour and the ninth title of her career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the first clay court title she has won since the 2017 French Open. Moreover, this was the second title she has claimed from a clay court event and her fifth from a 500-level tournament. And finally, she becomes the first player representing Latvia to win the title in Stuttgart since the event joined the tour in 1978.
Heading into this tournament, Sabalenka was ranked as the Number 1 tennis player on the 2025 WTA Tour, while Ostapenko carried the Number 24 designation. By winning in Stuttgart, Ostapenko has received 500 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Sabalenka has picked up 325 points.
Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan (No. 10) was the tournament’s reigning champion. She opted not to compete anywhere this week. Furthermore, Sabalenka was the event’s first seed while Ostapenko entered the main draw as an unseeded player. The top four seeds received a bye into the second round of competition.
Ostapenko arrived in the final after winning against qualifier Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine (No. 46), seventh seed Emma Navarro of the United States (No. 11), second seed Iga Świątek of Poland (No. 2), and Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia (No. 22). This was the 18th WTA final she has competed in and her seventh at a 500-level event. She prevailed against the tour’s top two players to secure the title.
In the other half of the main draw, Sabalenka defeated Anastasia Potapova of Russia (No. 38), Elise Mertens of Belgium (No. 29), and fifth seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy (No. 6). This was the 36th WTA final she has contested and her 12th at a 500-level event. This was the fourth time she has reached the final in Stuttgart. Previously, she was the runner-up in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The revised rankings for the 2025 WTA Tour were officially released earlier today. The tour will now play one tournament from April 22-May 4: the Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain (a WTA 1000 event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Świątek is the reigning champion at the Madrid Open. She will be attempting a title defense as the event’s second seed this year. Meanwhile, Sabalenka and Ostapenko will also be playing as the event’s first and 23rd seeds, respectively. All 32 seeds will advance directly to the second round of competition.
