Jordan Thompson of Australia Claims His First ATP Title at 2024 Los Cabos Open
He becomes the fifth player to win his first ATP title in 2024 so far.
Jordan Thompson, 29, of Australia defeated Casper Ruud, 25, of Norway to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Los Cabos Open in Los Cabos, Mexico (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 6-3 and 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker) in favor of Thompson.
This was the fourth match Ruud and Thompson have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with Ruud leading their prior meetings 2-1. Notably, their three previous matches happened in the opening rounds of Grand Slams. Today’s victory is the first title Thompson has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the first title of his career in single’s competition. He now becomes the fifth player to win his first ATP title during the 2024 season.
Heading into this tournament, Ruud was ranked as the Number 12 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Thompson carried the Number 40 designation. By winning in Los Cabos, Thompson has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Ruud has picked up 165 points.
Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece (No. 11) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year though, he lost in the semifinals to Ruud. Ruud and Thompson were the event’s fourth and eighth seeds in the main draw. The competition allowed the top four seeds to advance directly to the second round.
Thompson arrived in the final after winning against Ernesto Escobedo of Mexico (No. 494), Emilio Nava of the United States (No. 146), Alex Michelsen of the United States (No. 74), and Alexander Zverev of Germany (No. 6). He knocked out the tournament’s first and fourth seeds to win the title.
In the other half of the main draw, Ruud defeated Marcos Giron of the United States (No. 44), Nuno Borges of Portugal (No. 47), and Tsitsipas. He prevailed against the event’s second seed.
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, February 26. The tour will then play three tournaments between February 26 and March 3: the Dubai Tennis Championships in Dubai, UAE (an ATP 500 event), the Mexican Open in Acapulco, Mexico (an ATP 500 event), and the Chile Open in Santiago, Chile (an ATP 250 event). The Dubai Tennis Championships and the Mexican Open will be played on hard courts, while the Chile Open will occur on red clay courts.
Daniil Medvedev of Russia (No. 4) is the reigning champion at the Dubai Tennis Championships. He is looking to defend the title as the tournament’s top seed this year. Meanwhile, Alex de Minaur of Australia (No. 9) is the reigning champion at the Mexican Open. He is also trying to reclaim the title as the event’s third seed this year. And finally, Nicolás Jarry of Chile (No. 19) is the reigning champion at the Chile Open. He too is attempting a title defense as the competition’s top seed.
