Julia Kobick Becomes 150th Judge Confirmed by the Senate During the Biden Administration
Kobick will fill the sole remaining vacancy on the District Court for Massachusetts.
The U.S. Senate today held a recorded vote to confirm one individual as an Article III federal judge. With this confirmation, 150 judges nominated by President Joe Biden have now been confirmed by the Senate. With today’s action, 113 of Biden’s judicial nominees have been approved for service on federal district courts.
In a 52-46 vote, Julia Kobick was confirmed as a Judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She is Biden’s fourth confirmation to the 13-person court, with no additional vacancies at this time.
Kobick assumes the Boston-based seat previously held by William G. Young, who took senior status in July 2021. A nominee of President Ronald Reagan, Young served on this court from 1985 to 2021. Kobick was nominated to this seat on the federal judiciary by Biden in August 2022.
Kobick worked as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 2012 and 2013. From 2013 to 2021, she served as a Deputy Attorney General in the Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General. Since 2021, she has served as the Deputy State Solicitor for Massachusetts.
Notably, Kobick was one of five judicial nominees originally announced by Biden in 2022 still awaiting confirmation by the U.S. Senate over a year later. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has set a vote tomorrow for another one of these nominees - Ramon Ernesto Reyes Jr. for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
