Karen Khachanov Takes ATP Title at 2024 Almaty Open
The Russian won the title against first-time finalist Gabriel Diallo of Canada.
Karen Khachanov of Russia, 28, defeated Gabriel Diallo of Canada, 23, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Almaty Open in Almaty, Kazakhstan (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 6-2, 5-7 and 6-3 in favor of Khachanov.
This was the second match Diallo and Khachanov have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with Khachanov prevailing in their prior meeting. Today’s victory was the second title Khachanov has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the seventh title of his career in single’s competition. Moreover, this was the seventh title he has claimed from a hard court event and his sixth from a 250-level tournament. And finally, he becomes the first player representing Russia to win the title in Almaty since the event joined the tour in 2020.
Heading into this tournament, Khachanov was ranked as the Number 26 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Diallo carried the Number 118 designation. By winning in Almaty, Khachanov has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Diallo has picked up 165 points.
Adrian Mannarino of France (No. 56) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year though, he lost against Aleksandar Vukic of Australia (No. 85) in the second round. Meanwhile, Khachanov was the event’s third seed while Diallo entered the main draw as an unseeded player. As such, Khachanov received a bye into the second round of competition.
Khachanov arrived in the final after winning against Otto Virtanen of Finland (No. 116), wildcard Beibit Zhukayev of Kazakhstan (No. 213), and Vukic. This was the ninth ATP final he has competed in.
In the other half of the main draw, Diallo defeated Christopher O’Connell of Australia (No. 72), Borna Ćorić of Croatia (No. 96), second seed Alejandro Tabilo of Chile (No. 23), and fourth seed Francisco Cerúndolo of Argentina (No. 31). This was the first ATP final he has ever contested.
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, October 21. The tour will then play one tournament from October 21-27: the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland (an ATP 500 event) and the Vienna Open in Vienna, Austria (an ATP 500 event). Both competitions will be played on hard courts.
Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada (No. 21) is the two-time reigning champion at the Swiss Indoors. He is looking to defend the title as the event’s eighth seed this year - facing off against Sebastián Báez of Argentina (No. 27) in the first round. Elsewhere, Jannik Sinner of Italy (No. 1) is the reigning champion at the Vienna Open. He has decided not to compete anywhere this week.
