Democrat Adrielle Camuel Elected to Represent Kentucky House District 93
The election was called following the death of State Representative Lamin Swann (D).
The special election occurred today to fill a vacancy in the Kentucky House of Representatives. This is the first special election in 2023 for the state’s lower legislative chamber, with no additional vacancies at this time. The Democratic and Republican candidates were chosen by local political parties.
The special election for Kentucky State House District 93 was called following the death of State Representative Lamin Swann, a Democrat, from an undisclosed medical emergency. He represented the district from January 2023 to May 2023.
Democrat Adrielle Camuel has been declared the winner of the special election. The race was called in her favor as she’s currently leading with 57.57% against Republican Kyle Whalen with 42.43%. 13,765 votes have been counted.
Camuel has worked as an administrative professional at Fayette County Public Schools for the last 13 years. She has never held elected office before.
Whalen was the Republican nominee for State House District 93 in 2022 - losing 53.8-46.2 to Swann.
Kentucky State House District 93 covers parts of Fayette County - home to Lexington, the state’s second most populous city.
Once Camuel is sworn-in, Republicans will maintain control of the Kentucky House of Representatives with an 80-20 supermajority against Democrats. All 100 seats will next be up for regular two-year terms in November 2024.
