Louisiana State Senate Election Results
19 of the 39 State Senate elections for four-year terms were contested.
The general election occurred today in Louisiana to fill all 39 seats in the State Senate. A candidate needs to achieve a 50%+1 majority to be elected outright today. Otherwise, the top two finishers will advance to a November runoff.
Republicans currently have supermajorities against Democrats in both state legislative chambers - with a 27-12 balance in the State Senate and a 71-33-1 margin in the State House of Representatives. Today’s elections are the first to occur following the 2021 round of redistricting based on the 2020 census numbers.
The runoffs in the races not decided today will occur on November 18, 2023. Louisiana is one of only four states with regular state legislative elections this year - alongside Mississippi, New Jersey and Virginia.
