Republican Robert Allain and Democrat Samuel Jenkins Jr. Win Louisiana State Senate Runoffs
Only two contests went to runoffs for the 39-member State Senate.
The runoffs occurred today to elect two individuals to regular four-year terms in the Louisiana State Senate. These contests went to runoffs after no candidate achieved a 50%+1 majority during the nonpartisan primary in October.
Republicans currently have supermajorities against Democrats in both state legislative chambers - with a 27-12 balance in the State Senate and a 71-33-1 margin in the State House of Representatives. This year’s elections are the first to occur following the 2021 round of redistricting based on the 2020 census numbers.
Based on the results from the October general election and today’s runoff, 28 Republicans and 11 Democrats have been elected to the Louisiana State Senate for regular four-year terms. That balance was known before any results came in today as the two runoffs were contested by members of the same political parties. That means Republicans picked up one seat - which happened largely due to redistricting.
In District 21, Republican Robert Allain has been declared the winner. The race was called in his favor as he’s currently leading with 59.00% against Republican Henry LaGrange with 41.00%. 16,719 votes have been counted.
In District 39, Democrat Samuel Jenkins Jr. has been declared the winner. The race was called in his favor as he’s currently leading with 65.32% against Democrat Cedric Glover with 34.68%. 18,085 votes have been counted.
