Admiral Lisa M. Franchetti Confirmed as Chief of Naval Operations
She becomes the first woman to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The U.S. Senate today held a recorded vote to confirm one individual nominated by President Joe Biden to serve in a command post of the U.S. Military - specifically leading the U.S. Navy, one of the country’s six branches of the armed forces.
In a 95-1 vote, Admiral Lisa M. Franchetti was confirmed as Chief of Naval Operations for a term expiring in August 2027. She has served as the Acting Chief of Naval Operations since August 2023 - the first time the U.S. Navy has been covered by acting leadership on the Joint Chiefs of Staff since May 1996 when Admiral Jeremy M. Boorda died while in office.
Franchetti has served as the Vice Chief of Naval Operations since September 2022. With today’s confirmation, she will become the first woman to serve as Chief of Naval Operations and the first woman to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She was the second woman promoted to four-star admiral in the U.S. Navy’s history.
Joining the U.S. Navy in 1985, Franchetti has commanded the USS Ross, Destroyer Squadron 21, U.S. Naval Forces Korea, Carrier Strike Group 9, Carrier Strike Group 15, and the United States Sixth Fleet.
