Luciano Darderi Takes Back-to-Back Titles at 2025 Swedish and Croatia Opens
In Umag, the Italian battled Carlos Taberner of Spain in the final.
Luciano Darderi of Italy, 23, defeated Carlos Taberner of Spain, 27, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2025 Croatia Open in Umag, Croatia (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 6-3 and 6-3 in favor of Darderi.
This was the first match Darderi and Taberner have ever played against each other on the ATP Tour. Today’s victory was the third title Darderi has won on the 2025 ATP Tour and the fourth title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, he remains undefeated in every final he has reached - all of which were at clay court events at the 250-level. Moreover, he has now won two titles in back-to-back weeks. Last week, he was victorious at the Swedish Open. And finally, he becomes the fourth player representing Italy to win the title in Umag since the event joined the tour in 1990 - joining Fabio Fognini in 2016, Marco Cecchinato in 2018, and Jannik Sinner in 2022.
Heading into this tournament, Darderi was ranked as the Number 46 tennis player on the 2025 ATP Tour, while Taberner carried the Number 111 designation. By winning in Umag, Darderi has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Taberner has picked up 165 points.
Francisco Cerúndolo of Argentina (No. 19) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year as the event’s top seed, he lost in the second round against Taberner. Furthermore, Darderi was the event’s second seed while Taberner entered the main draw as an unseeded player. The top four seeds received byes into the second round of competition.
Darderi arrived in the final after winning against Tseng Chun-hsin of Taiwan (No. 101), wildcard Dino Prižmić of Croatia (No. 143), and third seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina (No. 51).
In the other half of the main draw, Taberner defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France (No. 140), Cerúndolo, Jesper de Jong of the Netherlands (No. 83), and fourth seed Damir Džumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina (No. 61). This was the first ATP final he has competed in.
The revised rankings for the 2025 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, July 28. The tour will then play one tournament from July 27-August 7: the Canadian Open in Toronto, Canada (an ATP 1000 event). The competition will be played on hard courts.
Alexei Popyrin of Australia (No. 24) is the reigning champion at the Canadian Open. He will be trying to defend the title as the 18th seed at this year’s event. All 32 seeds will receive byes into the second round of competition.
Darderi will be competing in Toronto as an unseeded player. In the first round, he will face off against a currently unspecified qualifier. Meanwhile, Taberner will not be playing anywhere this week.
