Madison Keys Triumphs In All-American Final at 2024 Internationaux de Strasbourg
Keys faced off against fellow American Danielle Collins in the final.
In the all-American final, Madison Keys, 29, defeated Danielle Collins, 30, to win the Women’s Singles title at the 2024 Internationaux de Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France (a WTA 500 event). The score in the final was 6-1 and 6-2 in favor of Keys.
This was the third match Collins and Keys have played against each other on the WTA Tour - with both having won a prior meeting. Today’s victory was the first title Keys has won on the 2024 WTA Tour and the eighth title of her career in single’s competition. This was the second title she has claimed from a clay court event. She didn’t drop a set in any of her matches this week.
Heading into this tournament, Collins was ranked as the Number 12 tennis player on the 2024 WTA Tour, while Keys carried the Number 16 designation. By winning in Strasbourg, Keys has received 500 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Collins has picked up 325 points. Simply by reaching the final, Collins will return to the Top 10 during her final year on the tour.
Elina Svitolina of Ukraine (No. 17) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year though, she lost against Clara Burel of France (No. 43) in the second round. Collins and Keys were the event’s third and fourth seeds, respectively. The event allowed the Top 4 seeds to advance directly to the second round. Moreover, Keys is the first American to win the title in Strasbourg since Jennifer Capriati in 1999.
Keys arrived in the final after winning against Wang Xinyu of China (No. 39), Magda Linette of Poland (No. 50), and Liudmila Samsonova of Russia (No. 19). She prevailed against the event’s third and fifth seeds to win the title.
In the other half of the main draw, Collins defeated Kateřina Siniaková of the Czech Republic (No. 34), Burel, and Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine (No. 56). She didn’t compete against another seeded player until Keys in the final.
The revised rankings for the 2024 WTA Tour will be officially released on Monday, May 27. The tour will then play one tournament between May 26 and June 9: the French Open in Paris, France (a Grand Slam event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Iga Świątek of Poland (No. 1) is the two-time reigning champion at the French Open. She is looking to defend the title as the event’s top seed this year. If she prevails again, she will become only the third woman in the Open Era to win three consecutive French Open titles. Collins and Keys will also be competing as the event’s eleventh and fourteenth seeds, respectively.
