Markéta Vondroušová Wins First WTA Title in Two Years
The Czech player claimed the title at the 2025 Berlin Open.
Markéta Vondroušová of the Czech Republic, 25, defeated Wang Xinyu of China, 23, to win the Women’s Singles title at the 2025 Berlin Open in Berlin, Germany (a WTA 500 event). The score in the final was 7-6 (12-10 tiebreaker), 4-6 and 6-2 in favor of Vondroušová.
This was the first match Vondroušová and Xinyu have ever played against each other on the WTA Tour. Today’s victory was the first title Vondroušová has won on the 2025 WTA Tour and the third title of her career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the first title she has claimed since prevailing at Wimbledon in July 2023. Moreover, this was the second title she has taken from a grass court event and her first from a 500-level tournament. And finally, she becomes the second player representing the Czech Republic to win the title in Berlin since the event returned to the tour as a grass court event in 2021 - joining Petra Kvitová in 2023.
Heading into this tournament, Xinyu was ranked as the Number 49 tennis player on the 2025 WTA Tour, while Vondroušová carried the Number 164 designation. By winning in Berlin, Vondroušová has received 500 points in the overall rankings. She also becomes the lowest-ranked champion in the tournament’s history. Meanwhile, Xinyu has picked up 325 points.
Jessica Pegula of the United States (No. 3) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year as the event’s third seed, she lost in the second round against Liudmila Samsonova of Russia (No. 20). Furthermore, Vondroušová used a protected ranking entry to compete this week while Xinyu entered the main draw after first prevailing during the qualifying competition.
Vondroušová arrived in the final after winning against seventh seed Madison Keys of the United States (No. 6), Diana Shnaider of Russia (No. 12), lucky loser Ons Jabeur of Tunisia (No. 61), and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus (No. 1). This was the seventh WTA final she has contested and her first at a 500-level event. To win the title, she took down two Top 10 players - both of whom have won Grand Slams in the last year.
In the other half of the main draw, Xinyu defeated Talia Gibson of Australia (No. 127), Jabeur, Daria Kasatkina of Australia (No. 16), second seed Coco Gauff of the United States (No. 2), Paula Badosa of Spain (No. 10), and Samsonova. This was the first WTA final she has competed in and her first at a 500-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 WTA Tour will be officially released on Monday, June 23. The tour will then play two tournaments from June 23-29: the Bad Homburg Open in Bad Homburg, Germany (a WTA 500 event) and the Eastbourne Open in Eastbourne, United Kingdom (a WTA 250 event). Both competitions will be played on grass courts.
Shnaider is the reigning champion at the Bad Homburg Open. She is looking to defend the title as the sixth seed at this year’s event. In the first round, she will face off against Donna Vekić of Croatia (No. 22). Meanwhile, Kasatkina is the reigning champion at the Eastbourne Open. She is also attempting a title defense as the top seed at this year’s event. She will battle Lulu Sun of Australia (No. 44) in the first round.
And finally, Vondroušová and Xinyu will not be competing anywhere this week.
