Matthew James Marzano Becomes Member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission
The NRC will remain under Democratic control through June 2027.
The U.S. Senate today held a recorded vote to confirm one individual nominated by President Joe Biden to serve on an independent agency within the federal government.
In a 50-45 vote, Matthew James Marzano was confirmed as a Member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a term expiring in June 2028. This position has been vacant since June 2023, when the term of Jeff Baran expired after serving since October 2014.
Marzano was nominated to this position by Biden in July 2024. He currently serves as an Idaho National Laboratory Detailee on the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.
The 5-member commission cannot have more than three members from the same political party. Marzano will form a Democratic majority alongside Chair Christopher T. Hanson and Bradley Crowell. The Republican minority features David A. Wright and Annie Caputo.
Biden nominated Caputo, Crowell, Hanson and Marzano to their current terms. Because of this action by the Senate, Democrats are guaranteed to retain control of the NRC through June 2027.
